Social Media News – Pinterest and Tumblr lead the way in Active User Growth.

December 2014

Latest stats show that Instagram has been knocked out of 1st place as the fastest-growing social platform by Pinterest and Tumblr. As far as an increase in active users is concerned, it seems that blog making/ things sharing and visual discovery are more popular than picture sharing just now.

Pinterest and Tumblr

According to new stats from Global Web Index, Facebook’s active users grew by 2% in the last six months; a tiny increase in comparison to the 120% increase registered by Tumblr and 111% by Pinterest.

Facebook is now lagging in 8th place (growth in active users) behind platforms such as Google+, YouTube, LinkedIn and Twitter.

Of course, growth is not everything, Facebook still leads the way by a massive margin in relation to popularity but many observers believe it could be reaching its peak concentration level.

Pinterest is a web and mobile application company that offers a visual discovery, collection, sharing, and storage tool. Users create and share the collections of visual bookmarks (boards). Boards are created through a user selecting an item, page, website, etc. and pinning it to an existing or newly created board.

Users save and share pins from multiple resources onto boards based on a plethora of criteria, e.g., similar characteristics, a theme, birthday parties, planning a vacation, writing a book, interior decorating, holidays. Boards can develop projects, organize events, or save pictures and data together. The site was founded by Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra and Evan Sharp. It is managed by Cold Brew Labs and funded by a small group of entrepreneurs and investors.
